Hazelnut frost to hit chocolate prices

A chart showing hazelnut production by country.

Global chocolate prices are expected to climb further after a spring frost in Turkey hit the hazelnut harvest. Turkey is the world’s largest producer of hazelnuts.

Chocolate makers have been increasing the fruit nut and caramel content of their products to offset high cocoa prices following poor weather in Ivory Coast and Ghana, and hazelnuts are one of the most common ingredients: Ferrero, maker of the popular chocolate spread Nutella, is the biggest buyer, using around 25% of the world’s total supply

The slump is a reminder of “how vulnerable the world’s food supplies remain to climate change,” Bloomberg reported:

Unpredictable weather has also hit coffee and olive oil prices
